Great touring and turns this past weekend on the Duffey, but some concerns noted that will be more important now that the snow is coming down full force again.
We found lots of near-surface facets at all elevations off the Duffey and some very mature surface hoar in protected areas below treeline. These have now been buried under storm snow that is heavier, warmer, and more dense. The storm began with little wind in some areas and then piled the snow on. Expect some serious stability issues at all elevations.
As well, closer to Duffey Lake itself, several glide avalanches to failure were observed.
Make good route choice selections if you are heading in to the hut and try to avoid more serious challenging and complex terrain, especially convex slopes that are wind-loaded. Expect a little work trailbreaking as well.
